Vendors braved cold temperatures Saturday to offer spring goodies for the first time this year at the Downtown Richmond Farmers Market.

The scent of smoked meats by HogFathers Barbeque and Catering and music by Cherish the Blue set the tone for shoppers.

The barbeque will be available most Saturdays. It uses meats from local vendors.

Also available were winter vegetables including greens, onions, potatoes, carrots and other root crops.

Fresh, cut-your-own soaps, crocheted cleaning cloths, recycled plastic bag baskets and pottery, in addition to dried and fresh herbs, jams and jellies, eggs, honey, goats milk cheese, freshly baked breads and sweets were available.

Berry bush starts, including gold and red raspberries, blackberries, and other fruit-producing bush starts could be purchased.

All of the vendors will be returning next week, for the market’s grand opening, April 4.

The grand opening will feature live music, a petting zoo with animals brought by the vendors and pony rides.

The markets will continue each week from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., every Saturday through Oct. 31.
